Shared Light, Shared City

Shared Light, Shared City takes “light” as a shared visual language connecting the Netherlands and Taichung. In the Dutch artistic tradition, light is never merely a matter of brightness and shadow; it is a force that constructs space, shapes rhythm, generates emotion, and carries a sense of spirituality. Taichung, as a city marked by abundant sunlight and a vivid sensitivity to color, also has an urban character deeply connected to light.

This exhibition presents five Dutch artists whose works approach light through abstraction, figuration, optical perception, surface, and spatial experience. Together, they reveal how contemporary Dutch art continues to explore the relationship between light, color, material, and ways of seeing.

Pascal van der Graaf|The Energy of Light
Pascal van der Graaf creates a dynamic visual energy through folded structures, glossy car paint, and layered colors. As the viewer moves, the surface shifts with changes in light and angle, recalling the movement of light across the surfaces of a city. His works exist between painting, object, and field of perception.

Rob Bouwman|The Structure of Light
Rob Bouwman uses simplified color fields, edges, and compositional rhythms to create a sense of order reminiscent of architectural façades under daylight. In his work, light is not simply depicted; it becomes a way of organizing the image and establishing a visual rhythm.

Mari Stoel|The Scenery of Light
Mari Stoel captures subtle light within everyday scenes, moving between figuration and abstraction. Her works offer a quiet and poetic viewing experience, allowing ordinary landscapes and interiors to unfold through delicate layers of color, atmosphere, and shadow.

Lieven Hendriks|The Illusion of Light
Lieven Hendriks moves between painting, object, and optical illusion. Through precise surface treatment, his works invite viewers to question the relationship between material, image, and reality. Light becomes a medium through which illusion and perception are constantly reconfigured.

Suzan Drummen|The Sensory Order of Light
Suzan Drummen creates intense visual fields through shimmering materials, geometric patterns, and ornamental structures. Her works transform light into a sensory experience, where color, reflection, and pattern form an almost ritualistic order of movement and perception.

Gathered in Taichung, the works of these five artists form a cross-cultural visual dialogue:

Dutch optical culture × Taichung’s urban atmosphere = a shared visual language

Shared Light, Shared City is not only an exhibition of artworks, but also a journey of migration, exchange, and coexistence through light. Through the distinctive practices of these artists, the exhibition explores how light moves between painting, object, city, and viewer, inviting audiences to encounter the subtle layers of contemporary Dutch art within the luminous atmosphere of Taichung.
