Order has long been a defining characteristic of Dutch culture. In the hands of Dutch artists, however, order becomes more than a means of organizing the world; it becomes a way of creating the unexpected.
At ART TAIPEI 2026, Bug 2 Gallery brings together six contemporary Dutch abstract artists whose practices explore the relationship between structure and sensibility through form, color, material, and space.
Pascal van der Graaf draws upon the geometric principles of origami, folding and shaping canvas into sculptural structures that extend painting beyond its conventional two-dimensional surface. His works combine deliberate construction with the unpredictable qualities of material transformation.
Jan Maarten Voskuil challenges the traditional rectangular boundaries of painting through shaped canvases. Curves, angles, and tension allow his paintings to extend into space, creating shifting relationships between color, form, and the viewer's position.
Lily de Bont intervenes directly in the woven structure of canvas, cutting, extracting, folding, and rearranging its threads. By exposing the material foundation of painting, she transforms the canvas itself into the subject, bringing geometric order into dialogue with the softness and vulnerability of textiles.
Suzan Drummen employs reflective materials, vibrant colors, and repetitive patterns to create immersive optical experiences. Her meticulously organized compositions shift with the viewer's movement, transforming precise arrangements into fluid and unstable perceptions.
Rob Bouwman explores the relationships between color, light, and material through layering, flowing pigments, and carefully manipulated surfaces. Beneath their apparent simplicity, his paintings reveal subtle variations and complex visual depths, turning the painted surface into a field of sensory experience.
Jos van Merendonk has developed a rigorously disciplined painting practice centered on the color green. Through repetition, linear structures, and subtle variations, he investigates the expressive possibilities within deliberately restricted formal conditions. Each gesture and rhythmic shift becomes an event worthy of sustained attention.
Although their artistic approaches differ considerably, these six artists share a subtle balance between order and intuition. It is within this balance that Structured Sensibility emerges.
