Shape, Spirit, and Structure

The duo presentation of Pascal van der Graaf (NL/TW) andYuma Taru (TW) explores the transformative dialogue between materiality, spirituality, and cultural memory.

Pascal van der Graaf, born in the Netherlands and now settledin Taiwan, creates folded and shaped canvases layered with automotive paintsthat shift with light. His works merge Western abstraction with Taoist notionsof flow and transformation, reflecting his artistic response as a “newimmigrant” engaging with Taiwan.

Yuma Taru, an Atayal weaver and cultural historian, carriesforward the textile traditions of Taiwan’s Indigenous people. Through naturalfibers, symbolic patterns, and ancestral narratives, she positions weaving as acultural archive and a vital means of sustaining minority histories incontemporary society.

Together, their identities generate a unique resonance:Pascal as an outsider-turned-immigrant seeking belonging through abstraction, and Yuma as an Indigenous artist sustaining ancestral heritage. Their worksconverge as a dialogue between the external and the rooted, the abstract andthe traditional—embodying Taiwan’s cultural multiplicity and the resilience offorms that bridge fragility and strength.
